The Diode Laser

Posted .

My patients and friends know that I’m a bit of a dental nerd – and as a dentist in Omaha, I embrace the dental technology that makes sense for my practice and patients. I’ve even checked out a special hard tissue laser to see if it would make sense to me and my family of patients – alas, that purchase is not yet in the cards, but my soft tissue laser – now that is a thing to behold!

The most commonly used laser in dentistry – the diode laser – received FDA approval more than 20 years ago and has made dental visits much more comfortable and easier for countless numbers of patients. Designed for the soft tissues in your mouth – gums, lips, and cheeks – the diode laser has many benefits over traditional methods and surgical techniques. It’s so versatile that it has uses across all specialties of dentistry and patients experience less pain and faster healing as its uses broaden.

The many uses of the diode laser…

Gum Disease

When you have gum disease, it can cost you more than your smile. Chronic inflammation can contribute to other health concerns and gum disease is connected to a number of systemic health issues. Treating it quickly and effectively is critical to your overall health. The diode laser can be used to treat the source of the infection without the use of antibiotics and risking all of their potential side effects.

Cold Sores

If you’ve ever had a cold sore – or are prone to repeated outbreaks – you know that feeling of dread when your lip starts to tingle, and your mind runs to any social engagements you may have over the next few weeks. If this is a concern for you, just give us a call as soon as you feel the tingling. The diode laser disinfects the sore, speeds healing time, reduces inflammation, and relieves pain.

Canker Sores

The most common of oral lesions – the canker sore – is a painful recurring condition that effects up to 66% of the population. Without treatment, these oral ulcers can take up to two weeks to heal, while making eating and oral homecare uncomfortable at best – and downright painful at times. Using the diode laser, I can hasten the healing time while also reducing inflammation and pain.

Gummy Smile

As you can see in my Smiles Gallery, a gummy smile is a common complaint, and one that erases confidence for many people. It can be caused by genetics, former inflammatory disease, or even the use of orthodontic appliances. Used alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures like crowns or veneers, the diode laser makes gum contouring treatments easier and more comfortable than ever before.

Other uses

Because they work so effectively on soft tissues, I also use the diode laser in other areas of my practice, including oral surgery. It can be used when restoring dental implants or preparing a tooth for a crown and is very effective when used during a root canal treatment.
